Gestures on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G

Double-press the side key

DocumentedInput: Side key

Requires: One UI 2.0 or later, including One UI Core (One UI 1.5 on Galaxy Note10); not on Android Go models

Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. Advanced features
  3. Side button (or Side key)
  4. Double press
  5. Apps (or Open app)
  6. Quick signal: side key

Single press always wakes or locks the screen. Natively, Long press only offers a digital assistant (Gemini by default from One UI 7), Bixby or the power-off menu, so it cannot open our app. Labels changed over time: One UI 6 and earlier say Side key and Open app (pick the app with the gear icon); One UI 7 and later say Side button and Apps. When the phone is locked, Open app asks for an unlock before the app opens (SamMobile, One UI 1.5; Samsung does not document this for later versions), so test whether our entry can show over the lock screen. Emergency SOS also listens to the side key: 5 quick presses on One UI 5.0 and later (Send SOS messages used 3 or 4 presses on older versions), so repeated double presses must be spaced out. On Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung says to keep the phone open when using side-key shortcuts. Samsung notes the options vary by model, region, carrier and software version.

Press and hold the side key

ReportedInput: Side key

Requires: Good Lock with the RegiStar module (Samsung, free), One UI 5.0 or later

Set it up

  1. Good Lock
  2. RegiStar
  3. Side key press and hold action
  4. Open app
  5. Quick signal: side key

Samsung's store listing and support page say RegiStar can run features by long-pressing the side key; that one of those features is opening any app comes from tech press and community guides, and the RegiStar menu labels above come from those guides too. The hold replaces the long-press action, so the power-off menu is then reached with Side + Volume down or the Quick panel. Good Lock is region-limited: SamMobile reported it reaching Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru in December 2022, and Samsung began a global rollout plus a Google Play listing (One UI 7 or later) in April 2025; check the Galaxy Store in the user's country. Listed only for Galaxy S, Z and Note models; not confirmed on A, M or XCover models. It feeds the same side_key input as the double press, so if both are mapped, either gesture counts as one side-key event.

Double-tap or triple-tap the back of the phone

ReportedInput: Back tap

Requires: Good Lock with the RegiStar module, One UI 5.0 or later; Galaxy S and Z Flip models only

Set it up

  1. Good Lock
  2. RegiStar
  3. Back-Tap action
  4. Double tap (or Triple tap)
  5. Open app
  6. Quick signal: back tap

Samsung limits back tap to Galaxy S and Z Flip phones (Z Fold4 gets a force-press action on the screen instead, not covered here). Launch coverage says it does not work on the lock screen, with the screen off or sleeping, or at 15% battery or less, so it only helps while the phone is unlocked and in use. Users report unreliable detection; RegiStar has a sensitivity setting. Good Lock availability is region-limited (see the RegiStar side-key entry).

Recommended presets

  • Shake ×3Sends a signal

Three sharp shakes within 2.5 s: hard to do by accident, easy to do without looking.

    Shake ×3, 0.15–1 s apart · whole gesture within 2.5 s

  • Widget ×2Sends a signal

Two taps on the home-screen widget within 3 s; a single accidental tap does nothing.

    Widget ×2, 0.1–3 s apart · whole gesture within 3 s

  • Side key ×3Sends a signal

Three side-key double presses about 2 s apart: deliberate, and the spacing keeps clear of Emergency SOS, which fires on 5 quick presses.

    Side key ×3, 1.5–4 s apart · whole gesture within 12 s

  • Side key ×2, then shake ×2Sends a signal

Two spaced side-key double presses, then two sharp shakes; needing two different inputs makes an accidental match very unlikely.

    Side key ×2, 1.5–4 s apart → then within 5 s: Shake ×2, 0.15–1.5 s apart · whole gesture within 15 s

  • Side key, then shake ×3Sends a signal

One side-key double press, then three sharp shakes; only two key presses, so Emergency SOS cannot trigger by mistake.

    Side key ×1 → then within 5 s: Shake ×3, 0.15–1.5 s apart · whole gesture within 12 s

  • Side key hold ×2Sends a signal

Press and hold the side key twice (RegiStar long-press action); a long hold is hard to do by accident in a pocket or bag.

    Side key ×2, 1–5 s apart · whole gesture within 12 s

  • Back tap ×2, then shake ×2Sends a signal

Two back-tap gestures, then two sharp shakes; back tap only works on an unlocked, screen-on phone, and the shakes filter out stray taps.

    Back tap ×2, 0.8–4 s apart → then within 5 s: Shake ×2, 0.15–1.5 s apart · whole gesture within 15 s

Gestures are set up in the phone settings as shown, then combined into a trigger recipe in the app, where practice mode shows step by step whether a gesture would trigger.
