Requires: Nokia XR20

Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. System
  3. Gestures
  4. Programmable emergency key
  5. Change sound profile
  6. Pick the option that opens an app
  7. Quick signal: key

Each brief press opens the app, so presses can be counted one by one. "Change sound profile" is the default brief-press action; tap it to change it. Press and hold is set separately (default: Dial emergency contacts). HMD's guide says only "select from the available options" and that the key can "open apps"; the exact label of the app option is not documented. Nokiamob reports the key can launch any installed app.

One hold opens the app, so one event means one hold. "Dial emergency contacts" is the default hold action (it calls your emergency contacts and texts them your location); mapping the hold to our app replaces it. HMD's guide says only "select from the available options" and that the key can "open apps"; the exact label of the app option is not documented.

Recommended presets

  • Shake ×3Sends a signal

Three sharp shakes within 2.5 s: hard to do by accident, easy to do without looking.

    Shake ×3, 0.15–1 s apart · whole gesture within 2.5 s

  • Widget ×2Sends a signal

Two taps on the home-screen widget within 3 s; a single accidental tap does nothing.

    Widget ×2, 0.1–3 s apart · whole gesture within 3 s

  • Emergency key ×3Sends a signal

Three brief presses of the XR20's programmable emergency key within a few seconds; each press is one event, so a stray single press does nothing.

    Extra key ×3, 0.15–2 s apart · whole gesture within 6 s

Gestures are set up in the phone settings as shown, then combined into a trigger recipe in the app, where practice mode shows step by step whether a gesture would trigger.
