Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. Advanced
  3. Smart key
  4. Quick signal: side key

Asus's ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro pages say a double-press of the Smart Key launches Google Assistant or your specified favorite app shortcut or action, and Asus's FAQ says the Smart Key settings (Settings > Advanced > Smart key) can open apps. On that screen, set the double-press action to open an app and pick Quick signal: side key; Asus does not name the option, so the label on the phone may differ. A single press still works as the power key. If the long press is given a custom function, it no longer opens the power-off menu (Asus FAQ). Asus does not say whether the double-press works with the screen off or locked, so test it. To keep a touch on the key from unlocking the phone, Asus suggests setting the fingerprint unlock method to Press only.

Recommended presets

  • Shake ×3Sends a signal

Three sharp shakes within 2.5 s: hard to do by accident, easy to do without looking.

    Shake ×3, 0.15–1 s apart · whole gesture within 2.5 s

  • Widget ×2Sends a signal

Two taps on the home-screen widget within 3 s; a single accidental tap does nothing.

    Widget ×2, 0.1–3 s apart · whole gesture within 3 s

  • Smart Key ×3Sends a signal

Three Smart Key double presses about 2 s apart; the spacing makes a deliberate pattern that normal unlocking does not produce.

    Side key ×3, 1–4 s apart · whole gesture within 12 s

  • Smart Key + shake ×2Sends a signal

One Smart Key double press, confirmed by two sharp shakes within 5 s; needing two different inputs makes an accidental match very unlikely.

    Side key ×1 → then within 5 s: Shake ×2, 0.1–1.5 s apart · whole gesture within 10 s

Gestures are set up in the phone settings as shown, then combined into a trigger recipe in the app, where practice mode shows step by step whether a gesture would trigger.
