Gestures on the iPhone 18 Pro Max

Press and hold the Action Button

DocumentedInput: Action Button

Requires: iPhone with an Action Button (iPhone 15 Pro or later; see the models), iOS 17 or later

Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. Action Button
  3. Swipe to Shortcut
  4. Choose a Shortcut
  5. DBP Shield
  6. Send signal

Apple: to perform the assigned action, press and hold the Action Button. Every press-and-hold runs Send signal once, so presses are counted one by one. Send signal is an App Shortcut, so it is listed as soon as DBP Shield is installed. With Shortcut selected but no shortcut chosen, the button does nothing. On iOS 18 or later the button can instead be set to Controls › Shield, but those presses arrive as control events, not action_button. The Action Button replaces the Ring/Silent switch.

Double-tap the back of the iPhone

DocumentedInput: Back Tap (double)

Requires: iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later (DBP Shield itself needs iOS 17)

Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. Accessibility
  3. Touch
  4. Back Tap
  5. Double Tap
  6. Shortcuts: your DBP Shield shortcut

Back Tap runs a shortcut from your Shortcuts library, so first create one in the Shortcuts app with DBP Shield › Send signal (Trigger: Back Tap (double)). Each double tap runs it once, so one double tap is one event. Apple doesn't say whether Back Tap works while the iPhone is locked or in a case: build the shortcut with Send test signal first, try it, then switch it to Send signal.

Triple-tap the back of the iPhone

DocumentedInput: Back Tap (triple)

Requires: iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later (DBP Shield itself needs iOS 17)

Set it up

  1. Settings
  2. Accessibility
  3. Touch
  4. Back Tap
  5. Triple Tap
  6. Shortcuts: your DBP Shield shortcut

Back Tap runs a shortcut from your Shortcuts library, so first create one in the Shortcuts app with DBP Shield › Send signal (Trigger: Back Tap (triple)). Each triple tap runs it once, so one triple tap is one event. Apple doesn't say whether Back Tap works while the iPhone is locked or in a case: build the shortcut with Send test signal first, try it, then switch it to Send signal.

Plus what the app offers on every iPhone: In-app button, Voice phrase, Control Center control, Lock Screen widget. How to set those up

Recommended presets

  • Control ×2Sends a signal

Two taps on the DBP Shield control in Control Center or on the Lock Screen within 5 s: reachable without opening the app on every iPhone with iOS 18.

    Control Center control ×2, 0.2–3 s apart · whole gesture within 5 s

  • Action Button ×3Sends a signal

Three press-and-holds of the Action Button within 10 s: each press runs Send signal, and three deliberate holds in a row rarely happen by accident.

    Action Button ×3, 0.3–3 s apart · whole gesture within 10 s

  • Back Tap triple ×2Sends a signal

Two triple taps on the back within 8 s: works on every supported iPhone, including those without an Action Button, and a triple tap fires by accident less often than a double tap.

    Back Tap (triple) ×2, 0.3–4 s apart · whole gesture within 8 s

  • Back Tap triple, then Action Button ×2Sends a signal

A triple tap on the back, then two Action Button holds within 15 s: two different inputs, so a pocket tap or a bumped button alone never fires.

    Back Tap (triple) ×1 → then within 5 s: Action Button ×2, 0.3–3 s apart · whole gesture within 15 s

Gestures are set up in the phone settings as shown, then combined into a trigger recipe in the app, where practice mode shows step by step whether a gesture would trigger.
